We have recently launched the Eco-Schools initiative at St. Michael’s, and are on a mission to make the school a ‘greener’ place to be.  We have elected a Green –Warrior Team, and these children will meet on a regular basis, act as spokespeople for their classes and lead the school in undertaking new ‘green’ projects.

As a school we have looked at some of the issues we think are important in making St. Michael’s a more eco-friendly place.  We are hoping to filter some of our ideas into the wider community, and help people understand that by looking after our planet and thinking about the consequences of our actions, we can make our school more sustainable.  (This means we want to try and be self efficient, make things last, reuse things, and reduce the impact our school has on the environment).  We want people to understand that how we live and what we do at school and at home can affect people living at the other side of the world.

Here at St. Michael’s we already do a lot of different things that contribute to looking after our planet.  We recycle what we can; be it paper, cardboard, ink etc, and reuse things rather than throwing them away.

Our nature conservation area has attracted lots of different animals and plants to the site, which we otherwise may not see.  We grow our own vegetables and our Green fingers club ensure the upkeep of our gardens and the cultivation of our compost!

We are careful to turn off lights in empty rooms and not leave overhead projectors running when they’re not needed!  Year 5 are going to be monitoring energy consumption within the school – hopefully they can help us find out ways in which we can reduce our electricity use.

Fast approaching is our Eco week during which children will learn a lot more about reducing waste and energy use and generally how to be more eco- friendly.  We may even take some of the children to visit a landfill site! – Yuck!

We are currently working towards our Bronze Award, which we hope to achieve before Easter.  We know what we are doing is beneficial but also understand there is always more that can be done -We need your help too!
