Governors

Every school has a governing body to help the school provide the best possible education for their pupils. The main roles of a governing body are:
  • to help formulate a strategic view, for example by assisting in the development of the School Development Plan
  • to act as a critical friend to the Headteacher and other staff
  • to ensure accountability, for example by monitoring the financial position and approving the annual budget.
They are also responsible for appointing a new Headteacher when this has to be done.

Governors are selected to represent all the different stakeholders in a school. At St Michaels, the instrument of government allows for:
  • 3 members of staff including the Headteacher
  • 2 foundation governors appointed by the local parish church, including the Rector
  • 5 parent governors
  • 2 governors appointed by the Local Education Authority
  • 2 community governors
The governing body may also appoint additional associate governors.

The governing body meets at least 3 times a year but much of its work is done by committees, such as the Finance Committee, the Building and Grounds Committee, and the Personnel, Welfare and Curriculum Committee. Like the staff, the governors at St Michaels have a heart for the children and do all they can to get the best possible education for them.

The current composition of the Board is:
  • Dr Chris Chatfield – Chair of Governors
  • Wendy Gillum – Deputy Chair of Governors
  • David Goucher – Head teacher
  • Patrick Reilly – Acting Deputy Head
  • Reverend Richard Wilson
  • Karen Mairs
  • Dr John Gilmour
  • Nicky Grizzell
  • Pete Lawrence
  • Lisa Lewington

The Clerk to the Governors is Shelley Durrant
