All you need to know about our fantastic school

St Michael's is a Church of England Voluntary Controlled junior school located in Twerton which is a suburb on the western side of Bath. It was founded in 1854 as Twerton Parochial School and until World War II was situated on another site.  Due to bombing in 1942 the school was moved around the community and subsequently moved to the present building in 1951 and became Twerton Church of England Junior School.  Our school was renamed St Michael's Church of England Junior School in 1999 to recognise the good links with local church and, in partnership, we continue to strive for excellence for our children and community.

St Michael's currently has 174 pupils on the school roll spread across 6 classes. St Michael's is well regarded within the Local Authority and community for its provision for its pupils, notably 'The Lodge' which is a successful resourse base that supports children with specific emotional and behavioural difficulties.  We are proud to say St Michael's is 'improving rapidly and has many strengths' (OFSTED 2011).

The children's standards of achievement in all aspects of learning and behaviour have improved considerably in the last few years.  Indeed, as OFSTED (2011) have noted that St Michael's has 'made significant progress over the last two years in raising attainment and improving teaching, learning and attendance.'

We take pride in the fact that our children are good learners and citizens and we constantly strive to maintain this.  This has been noted in our recent 2011 SIAS (Statutory Inspection of Anglican Schools) report that stated that children 'outstanding nurture is given to each child' and is coupled with the fact that St Michael's is 'an environment in which children are cared for deeply.'

St Michael's actively follows a policy of positive praise and reward for good behaviour. This approach is effectively raising children's self-esteem and encouraging independence. All pupils, teaching, non-teaching staff and Governors endeavour to put the aims of the school into practice day by day and to be seen to be 'working together for the best' reflecting the school's Christian foundations.

Over the past few years St Michael's has gained a number of awards in recognition for its provision such as the Artsmark, Activemark, Healthy School Plus, Let's Get Cooking, and FA Chartermark.  These awards are coupled to our Investor in People status as well as our recently renewed Inclusion Quality Mark as well as the strong links with agencies and organisations such as Bath Rugby and Bath City FC. All these awards and links have one common theme - the development and enrichment of our children.

In essence the following quotes from our recent 2011 SIAS report define what St Michael's stands for:

'...the school transforms the lives of children.'

'Children at St Michael's are given the opportunity to have hope.'
